About Us

The Association for Preservation Technology Canada (APT Canada) and The Association for Preservation Technology International (APT) were founded in July 1968 at a meeting of preservation professionals from Canada and the United States of America held at the Stanley House on the south shore of the Gaspé Peninsula at New Richmond, Québec.

APT Canada was established as a non-profit, educational corporation to encourage, promote and advance research, training and the dissemination of information relating to preservation technology and the conservation of historic structures, sites, objects and their settings in Canada.

APT Canada exists to further the goals of APT International for the benefit of APT members residing in Canada and the field of preservation/conservation within Canada.

The organization works to both create and promote learning opportunities such as field sessions, webinars, workshops, or conferences for heritage professionals at all stages of their careers.

Managed by an all-volunteer board, APT Canada is pleased to work in partnerships with heritage and cultural organizations across the country.


APT Canada’s primary objectives are as follows:

  1. To maintain charitable organization status, and to promote and support APT activity in Canada.
  2. To collaborate and foster joint activities and partnerships with other Canadian conservation organizations, and to provide leadership in consolidating and augmenting activity in the community.
  3. To support and facilitate the organization of the APT conferences, particularly when held in Canada.
  4. To provide a platform to promote and support APT activity by local APT Canada Sections through activities such as learning opportunities (field sessions, lectures, small conferences) and Research and Development initiatives (publication of leading research, participation in special conservation research projects), and to provide an organizational and logistical structure to promote, support, and facilitate these local APT Section activities.
  5. To promote and support the APT Training and Education Committee in providing training opportunities in Canada. With the help of local APT Sections, identify local issues and talent to supplement a core of experts that would be brought from APT and tour across the Canadian APT sections.
